As part of the liberalisation of the power sector, “Gestore dei Mercati Energetici S.p.A.” (GME - also known as “energy exchange”) was vested with the organisation and economic management of the Electricity Market under principles of neutrality, transparency, objectivity and competition. The Electricity Market is a virtual marketplace where, every day, producers and buyers meet to sell and buy wholesale electricity. Moreover, GME is directly committed to supporting the implementation of environmental protection policies, by organising and managing Environmental Markets. Through its Energy Efficiency Certificates Market and the systems for the transfer of guarantees of origin (GOs), GME helps promote the development of renewable sources and the reduction of harmful emissions into the atmosphere.
Law no. 99 of 23 July 2009 also assigned GME, on an exclusive basis, with the organisation and economic management of natural-gas markets, which consist of the Platform for the trading of natural gas (P-GAS) and the Gas Market (M-GAS) and forward physical natural-gas markets. Finally, GME was also entrusted with the organisation of a market of mineral-oil logistic services, the collection of storage capacity data and the organisation of a wholesale market of liquid oil products for the transport sector.
